1: Mastery

In this lesson, students are required to master the use of the Blogger template. Once they have shown mastery of a provided template, they are given the freedom to personalize their blogs' fonts, colors, background, and widgets.

PERSONNEL: None required

INSTRUCTIONAL MATERIALS (Technology): Computer lab with computer for each student, internet access, projector.

LESSON LENGTH: 60 minutes

PREPARATION:
  • Learning Center- Table in classroom with handouts including articles about personalizing blogs, editing HTML, and showing examples of aesthetic blog layouts.
  • Handout- Step-by-step guide to creating a simple blog on Blogger. Includes screenshots and directions, and replica of final product. (Students have opportunity to personalize blog on their own time. For purpose of this lesson, everyone has same format.)
  • Class email addresses- Each student has a personal email address and password (provided by school or teacher. Need access to email to create blog.

MANAGEMENT STANDARDS:
  • Students will not be able to move on until they have mastered this portion.
  • Students who are off task on the internet will not receive credit for assignment.


ANTICIPATORY SET:
Behavioral Objective (Do): Students will create a simple blog template on Blogger.com with 100% accuracy according to the template they are given.

Motivation (Teacher Created): As students come into lab, they find computer with their email address written on a card. Password written on back of card. Follow instructions to log in.)

METHODOLOGY (Teaching):
  • Unit Preassessment- Survey students’ prior knowledge of blog creation with handout:

a.      If so, which platform did you use to create it?

2.     For which of the following do you use a computer? (Circle all that apply.)

3.     What is your favorite website?

  • Volunteers share survey answers with class.
  • Walk the students through login to Blogger, creation of new blog, and template selection, settings, and layout using the overhead projector. Students follow along together.
  • Explain the importance of simplicity, readability, and design.
  • Students explore Blogger independently for ten minutes. They may work with the settings, layout, design, and posting. (Guided practice.)
  • Pass out handout.
  • Students work independently to follow handout exactly to create blog templates, first posts, and layouts.
  • Blog matching template will be ticket out. Students who finish early can customize their blogs with different layouts, fonts, and widgets, but only after they complete assignment.

MODEL (Demo):
  • Use overhead projector to walk students through set-up and Blogger elements.
  • Show differences between clean and cluttered blog layouts.
  • Leave the correct finished template on projector for students to see as they work.

GUIDED PRACTICE (Checking for understanding - group) LEARNING TASKS (Activities):
Students explore Posting, Stats, and Design elements on Blogger after teacher has gone through set-up. Circulate to answer questions.

INDEPENDENT PRACTICE (Monitor/adjust – individual) PRODUCTIVE MODALITIES:
Students use handout to reproduce template given to them.
Summative assessment: Students who have mastered the ability to use Blogger will have exact replicas of the blog template given to them. Teacher validates when students finish.  

Mastery: Students will be able to use handouts from learning center to personalize blogs.
Nonmastery: Teacher reviews nonmastered elements on projector, then validates finished blogs. Repeat again for nonmastery.

CLOSURE:
Blog is theirs to personalize using learning center handouts or internet research. Come tomorrow with a new resource they have found to personalize blog. 

DIFFERENTIATED LEARNING ACTIVITIES (Learning centers, manipulatives, special needs, etc):
           
Gate: Option to use internet to research ways to alter HTML, Blogger templates, and widgets.
Challenged: Students will be able to ask for help from their neighbors and teacher during guided practice. Teacher reviews nonmastered elements during independent practice.
Handicapped (Wheel Chair): Student will have a wheelchair access computer desk.

ASSESSMENT (Objective verb): Create      RUBRIC (What does it measure?): Students’ ability to create a blog on Blogger. 

Informal: Preassesment, modeling, guided practice 
Formal:
            Mastery = 100% replication of template. Students move on to personalize blogs.

Nonmastery = Less than 100% replication of template. Point out missing elements. If needed, review missing elements and show on projector until mastery is achieved.
